This week M+K sits across the table with Ruth Delahunty, Director, Yogaru. She talks with us about cooking, creativity and community.

1. My cooking inspiration…

Definitely my mum. Everything was home-baked when I was growing up. She has a real flair for cooking instinctively. A skill that took me years to master. She instilled a love and appreciation for fresh homemade food in me. I prep everything from scratch for my gang, and hopefully am giving them the same appreciation for the journey of the food ‘from field to fork,’ and the time and care invested in preparing meals.

2. A meal that reminds me of home…

A big tomatoey bean hotpot with lots of added peppers and sweetcorn and a slice of homemade sourdough. We have this every Saturday. I prep it in the morning so all its flavours infuse together and it’s ready to warm up when we get home from our day’s activities.

3. A life lesson cooking has taught me…

Slowing down and enjoying the process is always worth the time invested. Life is so busy that reaching for the fast option in the kitchen is letting this busyness seep into every area of life. Cooking is an opportunity to take your time and start to relax at the end of your day.

4. When I want to be creative I…

Browse through my cookbooks for inspiration and try out some new vegan bakes that I can put my own spin on. I’m big into baking sourdough and fermented foods too so I like to experiment with new flavours of sourdough and kombucha.

5. The most transformational book I’ve read is…

I love A Life Worth Breathing by Max Strom. I have listened to the audio book twice and have read the book too. It made so much sense to me and is very accessible and down to earth read.

6. The routines that keep me grounded are…

I thrive on routine. I wake up naturally at 6 am, head out for a run or a walk and have plenty of time for my yoga practice when I get back home – before the house wakes up looking for its brekkie!

7. I recently learnt…

How to cut hair! We’re in lockdown land in Dublin and we have all had to learn new skills and how to double and triple job. I’m baking and making a huge volume of comfort foods for kiddies thrown out of their routines, running my yoga business and studying to complete my 500hr yoga teacher training.

8. Favourite random act of kindness…

I love politeness, it doesn’t take much time to be polite and can really have such a positive impact on someone’s day.

9. To make a difference in my community I…

As much as possible I try to live a conscious life, respect the environment and all those living in it. Our actions have huge impacts and every decision we make has an accumulative possibility to do good.

10. Right now, I’m grateful for…

I’m finding lockdown has made me incredibly grateful for the little things in life – being able to go for a walk with my family, feeling safe and secure at home, making home bakes with the kids, swimming in the Irish Sea.
