This week M+K sits across the table with Sarah Metzger, Studio Owner, (Here) Yoga. She talks with us about cooking, creativity and community.

1. My cooking inspiration…

Is my mom! I have such fond memories of rolling dough, chopping veggies, and stirring up all sorts of delicious homemade cuisine with my mom growing up. Whenever I’m in the kitchen, I try to channel her skills and the magic of those memories.

2. A meal that reminds me of home…

Homemade pasta sauce on angel hair spaghetti. Those store-bought jars of sauce never compare to the intuitive mix of ingredients from a home-cooked tomato sauce!

3. A life lesson cooking has taught me…

Is to go with the flow and trust your gut. I used to be pedantic with my measurements, actioning every step of the recipe to a perfect T–probably since baking is more of a science than an art. But over time, I’ve learned that using your taste and a pinch of this or that can make cooking much more enjoyable and quite an adventure, which is way more fun than forced precision!

4. When I want to be creative I…

Get some inspo from whatever foodies I follow online, grab whatever is in the pantry, chuck on some tunes, and see what I can create!

5. The most transformational book I’ve read is…

Into the Magic Shop by James Doty. It’s a true story, but almost unbelievable. It’s uplifting, full of twists and turns, and has incredibly insightful tips on living a more meaningful life with more love and connection. I could not put it down, and I recommend it to everyone I know 🙂

6. The routines that keep me grounded are…

All about connection. I find connection to myself in my daily meditation, to my body in some kind of movement (yoga, fitness, beach stroll, anything!), and to my friends and family with catchups or calls as often as possible.

7. I recently learnt…

That humans have the same number of vertebrae in their neck as a giraffe!!! Most mammals (including humans and giraffes) have 7 cervical vertebrae. The only two mammals that don’t have seven are the sloth and the manatee.

8. Favourite random act of kindness…

Buying a coffee for a friend, it’s simple and easy to do often and makes people feel loved in a little way.

9. To make a difference in my community I…

Share all the tools I’ve learned in my life, from taking a few deep breaths to learning to accept yourself, I have learned many things during this weird and wonderful life, and I know that sharing the lessons makes it all worthwhile.

10. Right now, I’m grateful for…

FaceTime. I’ve been loving connecting to people near and far by seeing their beautiful faces on my little screen. In a time where the pandemic might have us feeling isolated, I’ve used it as an opportunity to check-in with the people I love more than ever before, and it has been really amazing. Little silver lining 🙂

After growing up in Michigan, USA and then travelling the world on cruise ships for seven years, Sarah Metzger landed in Melbourne, Australia where she grew her love of teaching and yoga into an amazing yoga community. Sarah owns and teaches yoga at (Here) Yoga in Melbourne, a beautiful community dedicated to providing intelligently-designed yoga in a safe, friendly and calming atmosphere. (Here) Yoga is built on the foundations of community, connection, and sincerity. Beyond the studio, Sarah loves baking (sometimes) healthy treats to share with friends, getting outdoors (including ocean dips all year round!), and catching up with girlfriends for coffees and chats.
