Summer dining: Choosing the perfect rosé

Summer dining: Choosing the perfect rosé

Jun 27, 2020 |

Special guest contributor, Michele Kawamoto Perry, certified sommelier and Founder, The Forward Project, a Los Angeles-based leadership consultancy, shares her tips for choosing the perfect rosé for summer dining.

Summer has arrived – the season of warm nights and chilled rosé!

Refreshing and flavorful, this blush wine has just the right amount of body to both tease your palate and quench your thirst. It’s the perfect accompaniment to any of your summer socials (with the proper distancing of course)! Not to be confused with White Zinfandel, rosé wines are dry, crisp, and sophisticated.

How to choose the best rosés for your occasion? It depends on what kind of flavour you are seeking:

Light and delicate

Try a Pinot Noir rosé from the Burgundy or the Sancerre region of the Loire valley in France for hints of strawberry and raspberry. You might also try a Rosado (Italian rosé) from Tuscany, Italy, made from Sangiovese for hints of tart cherries, cranberries and bright acidity.

Spicy and peppery

Try a Grenache- or Syrah-based rosé from the Tavel or Lirac in the Rhône valley in France. Also noteworthy are the juicy strawberry and often tangy Tempranillo-based Rosados (Spanish rosé) from Navarra region. New World rosés from Australia (Grenache, Shiraz), Argentina (Malbec) or California (Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir) tend to be more luscious with cherry and watermelon flavours (which some have compared to Jolly Rancher candies)!

Surprise Me!

Not sure what you’d prefer? Take a tasting tour around the world by sampling rosés from various regions throughout the summer. Perhaps you will discover that different rosés suit different occasions – whether you are having a luau on the beach or enjoying a picnic in the park. Most importantly, enjoy!
