This week M+K sits across the table with Felicia Simion, Photographer + Visual Artist. Her images impart a surreal quality, capturing the essence of nature, while challenging our perceptions of reality. She has captured traditional Romanian village life, exploring the purity of childhood lost and a pre-modern way of living. Her recent work explores the joys of motherhood, reminiscent of Mary Cassatt’s warm expressions of this intimate and unique bond.

1. My cooking inspiration…

Comes from my mother, who taught me what good taste feels like. I love a Romanian website called Savori Urbane – “Urban Savours.” They present their recipes so beautifully. I am so inspired by international cuisine, borrowed spices…

2. A meal that reminds me of home…

Sarmale, cabbage rolls filled with minced meat. My mom makes the best of them, especially at Christmas time.

3. A life lesson cooking has taught me…

When life seems tasteless, just add some salt.

4. When I want to be creative I…

Take a day off to travel somewhere. Anywhere, just go.

5. The most transformational book I’ve read is…

A classic, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince.

6. The routines that keep me grounded are…

Walking, taking photos, listening to the sounds of nature.

7. I recently learnt…

A bit of graphic design during an over-the-weekend practical course.

8. Favourite random act of kindness…

Saying hello to a stranger.

9. To make a difference in my community I…

Began a photo-documentary project named Motherhood, which explores a variety of maternity stories.

10. Right now, I’m grateful for…

My daughter being healthy and growing beautifully.
